The Moment of Truth on Fox
Returning to the Fox network,
the May 27th episode of The Moment of Truth (8:00 p.m. ET),
has earned our recognition as the Worst TV Show of the Week.
On a budget set consisting of two chairs, and hosted by Mark
L. Walberg, contestants need only truthfully answer a series of increasingly
cringe-inducing questions about their personal, professional and sexual lives in
order to win up to $500,000. The only “game” involved is deciding what horrible
truths contestants can live with their family, friends and all of America
knowing.
This week’s contestant, 28-year-old “trust fund kid” and gold
broker Curtis Frank, faced questions such as: “Have you ever watched more than
a minute of gay pornography,” “Have you ever had sexual relations with a woman
inside your family’s furniture store,” and “Have you ever told someone you’d
been tested for a sexually transmitted disease, when, in fact, you hadn’t?”
The answers were all, unfortunately, yes.
Surrounded by a faceless, jeering audience, contestants like
Curtis enter a dark prime time of the soul in exchange for cash money they’ll
probably regret ever having earned.
Faced by his mother, younger brother and best friend, Curtis
answered “yes” when asked whether he wanted to resume his relationship with
ex-girlfriend Aurora, who was in the audience. By her expression, Aurora seemed
to be considering a reconciliation. Unfortunately Curtis’ answer of “yes” to the
final question, “While you were dating Aurora, did you ever cheat on her?”
suggests that in the end, she changed her mind.
For any contestant, or anyone who watches The Moment of
Truth, another important question should be asked: does anyone ever expect
this show to end on a positive note? Next week a former Hooters waitress will
continue in a long line of those who choose to find out. Maybe it will all turn
out for the best.
Just don’t bet on it.
For its graphic sexual
descriptions, The Moment of Truth deserves the title Worst TV Show
of the Week.
