30 Rock on NBC

Apparently the writers for 30 Rock spent their free time during the writer’s strike gaining artistic inspiration from pornography.  On April 10th NBC welcomed viewers back to their comedy line-up with an episode of 30 Rock entitled “MILF Island.”  MILF is an acronym meaning “Mother I’d Like to F***.”  The episode featured actual boys with attractive women on a spoof reality show.  What began as satire quickly descended to raunch, and richly deserves our pick for Worst of the Week.

During the episode, which aired at 8:30 p.m. ET, network employees are consumed with the season finale of the show “MILF Island” where attractive older women are placed on an island with fifty 8th grade boys.  While there is no excuse to introduce a term like “MILF” to viewers in the Family Hour, the initial goal of the episode seemed to be poking fun at the absurdities of reality programming.  But when the show has a woman remove her bikini top in front of an 8th grade boy and throw it in the fire because “we no longer want to hit that,” the alleged satire and social commentary deserves to be scrutinized itself.

30 Rock’s introduction of this content to broadcast television is in poor taste and utterly irresponsible.  What’s even more troubling about this episode is that, while a woman’s naked breast was not exposed and no depictions of sex were shown, anyone who wanted to know what a “MILF” was following the program would certainly see more than broadcast or cable could show them with a simple Google search of the word.  30 Rock has bridged the gap between pornography and prime-time television. This episode showed NBC’s recent promise to establish 8:00 p.m. as a haven for Family Hour programming to be a lying, cynical sham.
