New Amsterdam on FOX

For the second time in its first month on broadcast television, Fox’s crime drama New Amsterdam earns our Worst of the Week.  Graphic depictions of murder and sexual violence dominate nearly every moment of the episode, which aired on March 17^th at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The episode begins with a nun being raped and stabbed to death.  The viewer sees the attacker pinning the holy woman to the ground and ripping her shirt open.  He raises a large serrated knife into the air and thrusts it into her chest several times.  Blood is shown dripping from the blade.  On a coroner’s table, the nun’s corpse is shown with multiple stab marks in her chest.  The coroner explains that semen was found on her body and that she had “severe vaginal tearing.”  When a second woman is attacked by the same man, detectives realize they have a serial rapist on their hands.  Though the second woman survives the attack she is later slain by her own father, who believes she has lost her honor by being raped.

Paralleling the main story, the immortal John Amsterdam is shown in the early 1800s defending the honor of his lover, who was raped by a wealthy landowner.  John challenges the man to a duel and shoots him to death with a bloody gunshot to the stomach.

This type of vile sexual violence has no place in prime-time broadcast television and is our clear choice for Worst of the Week.
